Heart-warming, inspiring, sweet and funny, Billy Elliot, directed by Stephen Daldry, was the thing at that time. The film was later turned into Billy Elliot the Musical in 2005, which opened on Broadway in 2008.

On top of that success, the film brought in a worldwide gross of $109.3 million against a 3 million budget (in pounds) and was nominated for a ton of awards, including three Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and Best Original Screenplay. Upon release, Billy Elliot was one of the breakout hit films of the year, earning rave reviews from critics and holding an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

While Billy struggles with the negative stereotype attached to being a male ballet dancer, Mrs. Wilkinson (Julie Walters) doesn’t see often.
